Farmers Markets in Los Angeles
Overview: Support the local farmers! A real treat for your taste buds and olfactory and visual senses, the Farmers Markets of Los Angeles offer a reprieve from the mega grocery store chains. Los Angeles has the benefit of prime weather, making it conducive for local farmers to grow and provide the freshest produce in town.
Farmers Markets are large, open-air markets where vendors set up tents or canopies under which tables show off fresh produce, flowers and other items. The markets set up shop at various locations each day of the week and at various hours. Many of the vendors are the same and each Farmers Market offers the same mixed bag of produce and other items. Farmers Market L.A.
The original and most famous Farmers Market in Los Angeles is located at 3rd St and Fairfax Ave in the Mid-City of Los Angeles. Established in July 1934, the Farmers Market LA at 3rd and Fairfax is a historical landmark and one of the largest markets of its kind. Items here are wide and varied, ranging from fresh, vivid produce to meats and seafood to souvenir shops. This particular market has a very lively scene where people not only come to shop but to pass their days with the sites and activities that the market offers. Throughout the labyrinth of the market, you’ll find some of the notable grocery vendors, which are the Huntington Meats and Sausage, Farm Fresh Produce, Tusquellas Seafoods and Ultimate Nut and Candy.
The Farmers Market LA proudly caters to the international scene of visitors as evidenced in the slate of international restaurants within the market. Most of the restaurants are casual and open-air with patio seating. Grab a seat at the delicious The French Crepe Company (www.frenchcrepe.com, 323.934.3113), where crepes are creatively mixed with an assortment of ingredients such as chicken stew. Or, try some of the tasty dishes at Pampas Grill (323.931.1928). The number of eateries at the Farmers Market LA is staggering. For a great sit-down, tablecloth restaurant, make your way to Du-par’s Restaurant (www.du-pars.com, 323.933.8446), the restaurant with some of the best pancakes and sausage in L.A. Lastly, the Farmers Market LA has some of the liveliest karaoke at night time.
Farmers Market Santa Monica on Main St
While the original Farmers Market LA is a permanent L.A. institution and is open every day of the week, the other markets follow a daily schedule. If you are looking for more than a place to purchase produce and want to idle away a few hours, make your way over to the Farmers Market Santa Monica on Main St on Sunday mornings. Located at 2640 Main St at the corner of Main and Ocean Park, the Farmers Market grows pretty lively with live music bands (typically jazz), pony rides (yes, there’s a small area with a number of ponies) and a great central area in which to hang out and relax.
Prices here are higher than other Farmers Markets because it is Santa Monica and just a block away from the beach after all! The selection of produce and other items are not as extensive – not by any means – as the Farmers Market LA but people typically come to the Farmers Market in Santa Monica on Main Street to hang out in addition to picking up some produce. Oh, don’t forget to try the insanely delicious and enormous pancakes ($4 for one).
Farmers Market Hollywood
Sunday mornings and afternoon bring out the Hollywoodites to Hollywood Blvd and Ivar St. Between Hollywood Blvd and Sunset Blvd, you’ll get your usual fresh produce in between the funky clothes and trinkets. You’ll also get the Hollyweird experience of the local flavor, the fascinating to bizarre people. The most non-descript people walking around turn out to be the most interesting. You also never know who you’ll run into.
