Gallery Row
Overview: Right in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles and making use of the allure of L.A.’s Historic Core and other famous areas, Gallery Row presents a staggering concentration of arts. Gallery Row is located between 2nd St and 9th St (north and south boundaries) and Main and Spring Street (east and west).
Taking an active role in the Los Angeles community, local artists and members of the Arts, Aethtics and Culture (AAC, now known as Gallery Row Organization) committee, Nic Cha Kim and Kjell Hagen, proposed Gallery Row to the DLANC (Downtown Los Angeles Neighborhood Council) in 2003. Their proposal was immediately embraced and was kicked off by the first annual DLANC Block Party the same year. The following years saw more and more interest by artists, both commercial and non-profit. Galleries sprouted and so did participation and sponsorship. September 2004 also saw the creation of today’s Downtown Art Walk.
The Downtown Art Walk is a self-guided walking tour every second Thursday of each month of Gallery Row’s museums and exhibitions, which range anywhere from traditional to contemporary arts in every visual medium. A free shuttle service known as “Hippodrome” picks up and drops off folks. Just wave anywhere on the street if you see the bus and the driver will pick you up.
The number of participating galleries have now reached over 45. Some of the notable ones include Bert Green Fine Art (102 W 5th St, www.bgfa.us, 213.624.6212), Museum of Neon Art (136 4th St, www.neonmona.com, 213.489.9918), The Hive Gallery (729 S Spring St, www.thehivegallery.com, 213.955.9051) and Crewest (110 Winston St, www.crewest.com, 213.627.8272).
