Angels Flight Railway
Overview: Los Angeles may be a large city but one of its most prized possessions is the shortest railway in the world, the Angels Flight Railway. The lower part of Angels Flight Railway is located in the northwest part of downtown Los Angeles on Hill Street between 3rd and 4th Street. The north part of the Angels Flight Railway is at the top of Bunker Hill in the California Plaza.
The “shortest railway in the world” once shuttled the prominent los angelenos in the Bunker Hill area between Hill Street and California Plaza. The black and orange cars of the railway, “Olivet” and “Sinai”, opened in 1901. The angelenos paid a penny for the short ride from the then shopping district up to their once grand Victorian homes in Bunker Hill. The railway is now owned by Angels Flight Railway Foundation and costs 25 cents to ride. There is also a long, steep staircase along the railway tracks that folks can walk up and down on. This is appropriately named, Angels Walk.
The top of the Angels Flight Railway is recessed in the back of the California Plaza, located off Grand Ave and in the Bunker Hill area. From here, there is a spectacular view of Downtown Los Angeles.
