Adobe House (Avila Adobe)
Overview: Olvera Street’s Avila Adobe deserves a special mention due its distinction as the oldest standing home in Los Angeles. The Avila Adobe is located on the east side of Olvera Street in the El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument in downtown Los Angeles.
Once a grand, eighteen room palatial home of Mayor, Francisco Avila, the Avila Adobe now stands as the oldest standing residence with seven remaining rooms. This 1818 home has walls a few feet think and was built with timber and adobe brick. After severe earthquake damages, the Avila Adobe has been restored to give an idea of the original house and it now has an expansive, covered courtyard in the back, a family room, office, a sala and bedrooms. The history of the Avila Adobe and the early Californios hang on the walls in the courtyard of the house.
