Old Mill (El Molino Viejo)
Overview: Among Los Angeles’ historic buildings, The Old Mill (aka El Molino Viejo in Spanish) in San Marino stands heads and shoulders above most. The Old Mill is located in San Marino, or, the very east side of Pasadena, which is about 20 to 25 minutes east of downtown Los Angeles.
The charming Old Mill is Southern California’s first commercial, business building. It was built as a grist mill for Mission San Gabriel. Grist mills grind and convert grain into flour. The Old Mill has two floors and is constructed out of oven-baked brick and adobe slabs. The grinding occurred on the first floor and the California Art Club now has art galleries on the second floor. The charm of the foliage covered Old Mill house is enhanced by a deep set patio and a surrounding garden. The Digger’s Garden is comprised of various trees, including pomegranate trees, lemon and orange trees.
