MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Arts)
Overview: Los Angeles has the fortune of having three MOCA locations: MOCA at The Geffen Contemporary adjacent to Little Tokyo’s Japanese American National Museum, MOCA on Grand Ave at the California Plaza and MOCA at the Pacific Design Center on Melrose Ave.
MOCA is the leader and pioneer of housing, collecting and exhibiting contemporary art from 1940 till today. MOCA’s permanent collections and exhibitions are more than fantastic: they are relevant and secure a place in the history of art and culture. What you see today is what your children will see 50 years, 100 years down the line. The collections from all three locations are reputedly the finest contemporary collections in the west and surpass the contemporary collections at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).
The 5000 plus permanent objects at the MOCA locations in Los Angeles include every type of visual media, including the The Panza Collection, which include pop art and abstract expressionism from artists such as Mark Rothko and George Segal. The MOCA at the Geffen Contemporary was a police car warehouse which was converted in a museum and has a nearby MOCA store. From January to June 2009, there are no exhibitions.
The MOCA at California Plaza is probably the most unique of the MOCA locations in Los Angeles with the architecture and design making use of reddish cubes and cylindrical skylights. There is a funky, abstract sculpture of a disassembled and crunched airplane in parts in the front courtyard. This particular location sits in the beautiful California Plaza and has a large MOCA store. The MOCA at the Pacific Design Center is an extension of the Pacific Design Center and features photography, architecture, design and other forms of art.
