Central Plaza
Overview: As mentioned in the introduction of Chinatown Los Angeles, Central Plaza was constructed in the 1930s, culminating with the dedication of this plaza in 1938 by Governor Merriam. It also doubles as a popular movie location which includes Lethal Weapon, 4 Rush Hour and the Jack Nicholson starrer, Chinatown. Central Plaza is located at the northwest end of Chinatown between Hill St and Broadway just north of College St.
Central Plaza is very distinct from the rest of the field in Chinatown. When you head up Broadway, you’ll immediately catch sight of the elaborate East Gate of Chinatown with its sloping, triple-layered, tiled roof. A large statue of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, recognized as the Chinese as the leader and founder of modern China, sits just beyond the gate. The Central Plaza shines brighter than any other place in Chinatown with its festive colors and designs. Bright, red lanterns stream across the courtyard of the Central Plaza. The buildings are vivid shades of red, green, blue and yellow. Within this large plaza are small shops, restaurants, including the popular, 5-tiered pagoda-fashioned, Hop Louie, a restaurant/bar (the bar is on the ground level) second only to the Empress Pavilion and a major landmark to many. Check out the popular Grand Star Jazz Club as well.
