Knott’s Berry Farm
Overview: Don’t let the name fool you; Knott’s Berry Farm isn’t a berry farm (though it originally was) but it is one heck of a huge, exciting amusement park. If Disneyland didn’t have such a world domination on theme parks, Knott’s Berry Farm (Knott’s as angelenos refer to it) would be more of a household name, at least for families in the states. Knott’s is located in Buena Park, which is about 40 minutes (30 miles) southeast of Los Angeles (if you’re leaving from the westside of Los Angeles).
Knott’s Berry Farm is as much of a family theme park as Disneyland without all the grandiose excess and hoopla and without the heavy traffic. It’s just as exciting and fun, however. Whereas Disneyland has Mickey Mouse and Six Flags Magic Mountain has the Bugs Bunny cartoon characters, Knott’s has a section called Camp Snoopy, with all the Snoopy characters and Snoopy themed rides. Knott’s is also just as wheelchair accessible as Disneyland as well. The only difference is that you can only take one person with you to the front of the line (or exit).
Knott’s of course gets compared to Disneyland and Six Flag Magic Mountain. Consider Knott’s Berry Farm as a happy medium of its two competitors in Los Angeles. Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure lack the typical thrilling, extreme roller coasters and rides (although the Tower of Terror at Disney’s California Adventure is a fun ride) whereas Six Flags Magic Mountain does. Knott’s has both mild children’s rides (Red Baron, Rocky Road Truckin Company are a couple of examples) as well as extreme rides such as the daunting Supreme Scream, an adrenaline-pumping dropping machine, and the Boomerang. Knott’s rides and sections are laid out by themes. During the Fall, Knott’s pulls out all the gools and goblins during its annual, Knott’s Scary Farm.
Knott’s Berry Farm prices are also half the cost of Disneyland’s. Tickets are half price and vendor food and drinks and restaurants aren’t sky high either. Matter of fact, Knott’s has some nice restaurants, especially for the family. When you’re there, eat at Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Diner Restaurant. Their split pea soup and cornbread are pretty tasty!
