Ubud, Bali, Indonesia Travel Guide
About Getting Around Attractions Hotels Eats & Nightlife Essentials & Practicals
Transportation in Ubud, Bali
Overview: Most tourists in Ubud either rent motorcycles or hire drivers for visits to attractions that are outside Ubud’s city center. Ubud’s center, which includes Jalan Raya Ubud, Jalan Monkey Road and Jalan Hanomen, is small and can easily be covered on foot or in a wheelchair. Ubud’s city center has many attractions such as the Royal Palace and Monkey Forest that don’t require you to grab a cab.
CABS, TAXIS
Overview: Take a cab if you’re just hopping to the Neka Art Museum or the Antonio Blanco Renaissance Museum – somewhere out of walking distance yet a distance that’s close enough not to warrant hiring a driver for half a day.
Use the blue cabs and negotiate a rate. The Ubud cabs don’t have meters. A 1 kilometer ride should only cost around Rp10,000 to Rp15,000. They will start with Rp25,000 but just walk away and say no. They will always counter with, “What you pay?”
Location: Cabs are constantly driving up and down the main streets in Ubud. Just hail one down.
Cost: Rp15,000 per kilometer.
Jalan Monkey Forest to Neka Museum: approximately Rp40,000
Airport to Hotel: From the Denpasar airport to Ubud, a ride will cost you Rp170,000
Accessibility: The cabs are sedans. A motorized wheelchair won’t fit in one but a manual, fold-up one will. A manual wheelchair that doesn’t fold up can fit in the back seat of the cab.
SCOOTER & MOTORCYCLE RENTALS
Overview: It is so inexpensive to rent scooters and motorcycles in Ubud, Bali. There are an abundance of motorcycle rental shops where you can rent motorcycles.
Cost: Rp30,000 to Rp40,000 for an older motorcycle for 24 hours. Rp40,000 to Rp50,000 for a new motorcycle for 24 hours. Remember to negotiate.
HIRE DRIVERS
Overview: As is the case with South Bali, many major attractions require a motor vehicle to take you there. There are countless vans and SUVs on the streets in Ubud. I recommend hiring a driver with a van or SUV if you are in a wheelchair for half or a full day. I’ve listed some drivers I hired in Ubud.
