Ubud Traditional Market
Well, as you would expect, Ubud has no shortage of things to buy and people to sell them and more things to buy and… Ubud’s markets and artistic souvenirs for sale are a highlight of the Ubud experience. Ubud’s main market is the Ubud Traditional Market, or Ubud Market for short. It’s other markets include the Monkey Forest Art Market and marketplaces in Tegallalang, Batubulan and more.
The Ubud Market is located along Jalan Raya Ubud and starts from the west at Jalan Monkey Forest. You can enter from Jalan Monkey Forest but it’s easier to enter from Jalan Raya Ubud if you’re in a wheelchair. The market is a sprawling and has a maze-like den of stalls and vendors. The vendors and stalls seem to overlap each other at times and their items often spill over the pathways. So, the locals here sell anything from bags to decorative hanging Indonesian puppets. Fruits and vegetables are sold here as well. There are some very cool, intricately designed and crafted items such as hand-carved, stone wall art. There are lots of stalls, a lot of them separated from the market’s center, that sell local paintings. The artist themselves sell the paintings at times.
Tip: As usual, start off negotiations at 40 percent of what the vendors are asking for. Find a price point, say between 40 to 50 percent of the asking price and stick to it. If the vendors don’t want to do business, then head to the next stall. It’s amazing how many vendors sell the exact same things!
Also note that I did find the same items in boutique shops. The prices were higher but the quality of items were higher as well. For instance, I purchased a wooden carving in a boutique shop that had a much better polish and feel for about Rp100,000 (ten bucks more) more. AND, I was happy with the purchase.
