Nightlife in Hong Kong
Overview: An enormous cosmopolitan city with flashing neon lights without a nightlife? Come on! Hong Kong delivers nightlife. Besides, what’s a big city without a BIG nightlife scene…So the areas, which are many, in Hong Kong that deliver nightlife till you hurt are as follows:
HONG KONG ISLAND
Central
Central district is located on Hong Kong Island and the name aptly describes the location. It’s central but it encompasses the northern part of Hong Kong Island. Here, you have you main hangout in what today is arguably the most popular and coolest hangout area, Lan Kwai Fong, which is both a drinking bar and dance club haven for locals and expats. Lan Kwai Fong is located almost directly south of the Hong Kong ferry terminals. It’s below Queen’s Road and you’ll hit it when you approach D’Aguilar Street and Wyndham Street. You can check out the Lan Kwai Fong website for more detail: Lan Kwai Fong or just type copy www.lankwaifong.com. Be warned, however, that the street is not the easiest to wheel on because of the pseudo-cobble stones.
The other popular area is Sheung Wan where you’ll find the Man Mo Temple. The Sheung Wan ares in Central is located adjacently northwest of Lan Kwai Fong and is home to lower key bars.
WAN CHAI DISTRICT
So in Wan Chai, anything goes. This is where you’ll find the girlie bars and clubs as well as revered western pubs. There are lots of tall buildings that house different bars and venues in the Wan Chai district, ranging from $3 drinks to, sheesh, a week’s check (depending on what you do, of course!). One of the classiest and most popular but expensive is The Pawn, a restored colonial building which now serves as a restaurant/watering hole, which has great fish and chips (can you believe it!). Be prepared to spend some money here though. It’s located on 62 Johnston Rd, Wan Chai. Delaney’s is more accessible for the common man and it’s located at 18 Luard Road. As well, Horse and Groom on 161 Lockhart Rd is a lower key bar.
Wan Chai District is just east of Central District. On Lockhart Street and Jaffe is where some of the seedier places such as Bottoms Up and King Club, which are both girlie bars (the hostess with the mostess, so to speak). If you’re not down for the girlie bars, stay away from these streets, especially Lockhart.
KOWLOON PENINSULA
Tsim Sha Tsui
In Tsim Sha Tsui, Nathan Road and parallel streets as well as Moody Road, which intersect Nathan Road and runs east and west, are where the action happens. Much like Wan Chai, you’ll find both regular and girlie bars here. However, the crowd is a little more diverse since Tsim Sha Tsui tends to be more diverse. There’s Bulldogs Bar on 66 Moody Road which happens to be the second of its kind from the Lan Kwai Fong bar. Other bars include Club Full House and McLovin’s Tavern.
