Money Matters in Siem Reap & Angkor
Cambodia’s currency is the US dollar for anything that costs more than a dollar and the Reel for anything less than a dollar. No coins. However, you have to make sure vendors don’t give you Reel when performing transactions; that is, when you’re getting change back for anything greater than a US dollar, get USD change back such $1 or $5. You should only be carrying the Reel in coins.
Go to the Angkor Market convenience store and buy a couple of inexpensive items and change out large bills. Having smaller change is a good idea in Siem Reap, especially if you’re going to buy souveniers from one of the vendors on the street or at one of the stalls in the Angkor Wat Conservation compound.
Currency: Cambodian Riel
ATMS
The ATM machines in Siem Reap actually dispense US dollars. There are cash machines around the Old Market area. Withdraw money here and go to a convenience store to get change – small change – to use.

TIPPING
Tip well here. Cambodians aren’t the richest folks in the world. One US dollar for a $3 meal seems a bit much in terms of percentage paid but it’s dirt cheap here. And, we need it less.
