Wangfujing Shopping Street
Overview: An awesome shopping experience in an exotic land (I consider Beijing pretty dang exotic), Wangfujing Shopping Street is a retail goliath in Beijing. It’s Beijing’s huge leap forward in the shopping arena – out of the ashes of singular small malls and department stores and the marketplace bazaars. Located a two short blocks east of the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square, Wanfujing Street itself starts at Chang’an and heads north. The shopping street is closed off from vehicles and starts at Chang’an and stretches a few blocks north. At the Shopping Center, you’ll find western style retail stores such as Adidas, Chinese brand sports retail stores such as Li-Ning, large malls, tons of restaurants and traditional Chinese stores. The Chinese stores sell anything from exotic teas to chopsticks.
Within this mega shopping center is the Wanfujing Night Market (王府井小吃街夜市), which is a food market. At the Wanfujing Night Market, vendors sell exotic street foods such as fried scorpions to traditional Chinese food. It’s just a block north of Chang’an. A large archway and statues of cooks indicate the beginning of the night market. Wangfujing is truly an experience, especially at night when all the lights come on.
Location: Dongcheng District. Starts at the corner of Wangfujing and Chang’an
Accessibility: The Wanfujing Shopping Street and night market are wheelchair accessible. There are stores and restaurants that do have steps. For example, a famous and popular restaurant selling very inexpensive ramen type food, Brother’s Jiang, is on the second floor. To access this restaurant, you must climb a couple of steps and then use the escalator.
