Khao San Road
Overview: Khao San Road, or, Khaosan Road, in Bangkok is the number one destination for backpackers in Bangkok and probably in Southeast Asia. But, don’t let this throw you off. Khao San is one of the premiere market streets in Bangkok, party streets in Bangkok and hosts a ton of budget hotels and hostels. A little known trivia but Khoa San Road is featured in the movie, The Beach. If Tomb Raider put Cambodia on the map, The Beach put Khao San Road on the map for US backpackers and young travelers.
Khao San Road’s main area is closed off from traffic but tuk-tuks are allowed to drive through. Upon entering, you’ll see a crammed and cramped street of stalls, vendors and motley colors. The motley colors shine from the vendors and as well as the diverse tourists on Khao San Road walking around, shopping or hanging out on the patios of at one of the numerous restaurants and cafes on Khao San Road. You could stay on or near Khao San Road and never have to leave. Everything is right there. As well, Bangkok’s major temples are within a mile of Khao San Road.
Location: Khao San Road is located approximately half a mile north of the Grand Palace in the Bang Lamphu area.
Accessibility: Khao San Road is definitely a street to wheel on. The sidewalks are full of vendors but there is some rooms to move. Curbs have ramps as well and restaurants have outdoor seating. You just have to deal with large crowds.
