Grand Palace
Overview: Located in the historic city center on Na Phra Lan Road near the Chao Phraya River, the Grand Palace is magnificent in breadth and detail. This complex lies on the Chao Phraya River and served as the former home of the Thai kings and a residence for important foreign officials. The complex includes an inner court where the former kings lived and surrounding courts for the foreign officials. Along the grounds is a shrine where the Thais pay their respects to Buddha and offer food. In addition, The Grand Palace also boasts the most significant temple in Bangkok, Wat Phra Kaew, where the Emerald Buddha (Phra Kaew Morakot) is located. The Emerald Buddha was built in 1785 under the reign of King Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke (Rama I).
It is important to note that you must wear a shirt and shoes to enter to respect the sacred grounds of the palace.
Cost: 200 baht (Thais get in free)
Accessibility: The grounds, such as the walkways, of the palace are accessible and flat. Much of the structures and buildings within the palace grounds have steps; thus making entrances and thresholds difficult to enter. A tour guide, friends or strangers can help with pulling you up. However, the architecture of the Emerald Buddha temple and the royal home is magnificent to take in.
