White Rose Hotel
Overview: Boy, I really want to give The White Rose Hotel a 5 star overall rating but I’ll give it 4.5 stars out of 5 for aesthetics and only a 3.5 for wheelchair accessibility. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the White Rose Hotel even if wheelchair accessibility slightly lacked. Plus, wheelchair accessibility at a hotel in the heart of Kuta is tough to find anyway.
Tip: book the deluxe rooms 1001 or 1002 ahead of time. They are reasonably wheelchair accessible.
LOCATION: 5 out of 5
The White Rose Hotel is located down a small lane off Jalan Legian right in the heart of Kuta, Bali. The lane is long enough to make it feel like you’re in a resort far away and short enough to step out, walk or wheel about 300 yards and reach the heart of Kuta on Jalan Legian. At the end of this lane is the Kuta Memorial and less than a block south is the heart of Kuta’s nightlife (e.g., The Bounty, Paddy’s Bar, Engine Room). If you don’t like nightlife, bars, clubs, you should stay in Sanur.
SERVICE: 5 out of 5
The staff at the White Rose Hotel, especially the front desk clerk, Wardana, has excellent customer service. I booked the cheaper room on the second floor but when I arrived, I discovered to my dismay that the hotel doesn’t have an elevator. The hotel was booked full because I arrived at the start of high season in Bali. But, Wardana from the front desk, worked his magic with a couple of other customers and found me a room on the first level. Not only that, there was a step up to the entrance of the patio to my room. He had the hotel staff put a ramp there. He mentioned they made the ramp and would use it in the future for other folks in wheelchairs. Plus, my luggage had not arrived and Wardana and crew called the airport and airlines in the morning and night, daily. Plus, they followed up with me.
When you enter the White Rose Hotel compound, you’ll first encounter the hotel’s security gate at the end of the lane. Yes, they perform a scan of your vehicle for bombs because of the terrorist attacks in 2002 and 2005 (see Kuta Memorial). You’ll immediately notice that the “hotel” looks like a resort and that there are several buildings – maybe six or so – scattered throughout the grounds. The white buildings with red slanted and tiled roofs are a nice touch among the hotel grounds’ greenery. The lobby does have a step to get up to it.
The restaurant, which has the typical open-air style with bamboo columns, is great, although it does have a rather large step and another to reach the buffet food area. The White Rose Hotel’s breakfast buffet is excellent, by the way. Scrumptious and varied. On one side, the restaurant is situated next to a large grassy, manicured field. Adjacent and next to the restaurant is a curvy, large swimming pool where a dolphin statue fountain keeps refreshing the water. Throughout the entire hotel grounds are trees, grass and statues and walkways. the hotel does have a fitness room but it’s on the second floor!
The rooms themselves are pretty spacious, at least the deluxe rooms on the bottom floor, which are the only wheelchair accessible rooms. The rooms have dark, hardwood floors. The bathroom doorway is the only problem I had. Though my wheelchair fit through it, I could see it being a problem for much larger wheelchairs. Once inside the bathroom door, there is a decent amount of room to move (larger than my own at home!). There is no roll-in shower at the White Rose Hotel – only a bathtub with a handle and removable shower head.
I recommend this hotel. For the money, the hotel is great. Really great, in fact.
