Hotel Palm Garden
Overview: The Hotel Palm Garden (aka Hotel Taman Palem), on Jalan Kesuma Sari off Jalan Tamblingan, is a simple but decent hotel, especially for budget-minded travelers. I’ll just say that even though the hotel is not wheelchair accessible, I would stay there again to 1. save money. It’s about a two-fifth (almost a third) of the cost of Hotel Sanur Beach on average if you just walked in and asked for a room on any given day. 2. I like simple hotels and the Hotel Palm Garden is a simple hotel that has all I could ask for (except the wheelchair accessibility of course. Bummer!).
The hotel is ideally located at the south end of Jalan Danau Tamblingan at the semi-rotunda (intersection where Jalan Tamblingan turns into Jalan Cemara to the south, Jalan Kesuma Sari to the east and Jalan Danau Poso to the west). Go west on Jalan Kesuma Sari and you’ll hit the Sanur Beach boardwalk and the beach maybe about 300 to 400 yards down. Hit the rotunda and you can go up to Bistro 95 and all the marketplace shops all along Jalan Danau Tamblingan and Jalan Cemara.
The hotel’s exterior decor is simple but cute. From Jalan Danau Tamblingan, you stroll down maybe 100 to 200 yards. You’ll see two statues at the entrance to the hotel. The lobby has about a 4 inch step but to the right of the lobby, which is an open-air lobby, is a gate that’s open. There’s maybe a two inch step, almost imperceptible. The courtyard is fairly small and the swimming pool is fairly small compared to Hotel Sanur Beach and the White Rose Hotel and even Hotel Samsara in Kuta. Next to the swim pool is a grassy slope and a small restaurant.
So you can probably tell that the Hotel Palm Garden in Sanur is a cozy place. The only misgiving – and it’s probably the biggest one for a traveler in a wheelchair – I had with the hotel is that there are two steps that lead up to each room. Pathways of course run by each room. Each room is recessed so from the pathway, there is an initial step. The initial step is about six inches high but is deep enough to fit a large wheelchair. Then, there is another step up to the porch before each room. Now these steps are large and a pain in the butt. I asked the hotel staff to place a couple of mats in front of each step so I could use them as sort of a ramp and mount the steps.
The breakfast buffet at the hotel is decent. Customer service is, well, kind of lacking and I think it’s because the staff is so relaxed and leisurely. Also, the toilet in my particular bathroom ran loudly at times. My friend’s toilet didn’t make a peep in his room, however.
Overall, the Hotel Palm Garden is not wheelchair accessible. However, if I was to visit Sanur again, I would stay in the Hotel Palm Garden to save money versus staying at the lofty Sanur Beach Hotel. if you’re in a wheelchair and can mount large steps, I’d recommend this hotel. I loved the large porch areas in front of each room. If not, Hotel Sanur Beach Bali is for you. And, obviously, if you can walk and like budget hotels but not hostels, the Hotel Palm Garden is a great hotel.
