South Bali Markets
Pasar Seni Market (Art Market Tanah Lot)
Overview: I should not have been surprised to see a huge market at one of Bali’s most visited tourist attraction – the Tanah Lot. Duh! As commercial as Tanah Lot and its market are, I loved the Pasar Seni Market and surrounding restaurants.
The art market is exciting, especially if it’s your first time to Bali and the Tanah Lot is your first attraction you see in south Bali. This large market in Beraban village is thrilling and almost has a sense of big city outdoor markets of Asia. There’s plenty of bustling going on in the myriad of storefronts as well as vendors and stalls on either side of the main path that cuts through the market. You’ll find all sorts of Tanah Lot, Bali and Indonesian souvenirs, ranging from t-shirts and straw hats to paintings and handicrafts.
There’s a section where some older ladies set up their own small tables side by side and sell fresh, cut fruit. This is a cute section of the market. At the fresh fruit section, the ladies sell pineapples, coconut juice and more. One of the tastiest treats I had on the entire trip in Bali was what’s called clepon (I asked Ketut, my driver, to spell it out for me). The clepon is a mushed, sugary rice pudding wrapped in a banana leaf bed. Seriously, the clepon was sinfully delicious. And the cute old locals’ smiles make it impossible to wheel away from them without letting go a few rupiahs.
