Kuta Memorial
Overview: Not exactly your “happy place” to get away from the world but the Kuta’s bombing Memorial illuminates a strength that the Balinese possess. Instead of covering up the spot with another establishment and glossing it over, Bali’s resiliency shines in this dedication. The Memorial is right there in your face on Jalan Legian and you can’t miss it. You’ll see groups of tourists checking “something” out and you can’t help but stroll up and find out what the monument is. Soon, you discover it’s a terrorist attack memorial.
Yes, Bali’s had a couple of terrorist attacks in October of both 2002 and 2005. BUT, Bali’s stronger and as beautiful and fun as ever.
The stone and marble memorial itself is pretty chilling with names of each victim and all of their respective countries. The memorial is built on top of the original Paddy’s Bar, actually and it stands erected on an elevated platform just at the beginning of the small lane that leads to the White Rose Hotel.
