South Bali Nightlife
If Ubud’s (see Ubud, Bali) nightlife is like a trickle, then south Bali is like a roaring rapid. Tourists abound. Locals abound. Tourists buzz around in a state of excitement and intoxication, while locals readily create the excitement and promote intoxication. It’s a goooood time!
KUTA, LEGIAN, SEMINYAK
Overview: Kuta, Legian and Seminyak don’t kick off the party until around 11pm. What the kids do until 11pm or 11:30pm – I have no idea. They’re certainly not eating because Kuta’s nightlife is run by the frenetic energy of young foreigners – surfers – in Bintang tank tops and flip-flops and you know they’re not spending their money on food! This is actually quite an accurate description of Kuta’s nightlife. Kuta flips a switch at night and shifts into 10th gear. The moderately busy streets and sidewalks of the day transform into a swarm of headlights and eager and thirsty night crawlers at 11pm. The cars on the streets move so slowly, you can walk or wheel in front of them at any time. The few live music performances in the bars are drowned out on the streets by the bumps and blasts at the clubs. Groups of boys and girls run about, jumping from club to club. In the Bounty Disco, you can watch a band and people dancing across the room while you’re playing at one of the pool tables in the busy pool table area. At Paddy’s Bar, strobe lights flash quickly over sweaty bodies, drinking, smoking, laughing, high-fiving. At any bar or club, you’ll see female tourists out on the night with their “Kuta cowboys.”
Yes sir. Kuta’s the place to throw down. Knock back your inhibitions with your first Bintang Beer of the night.
THE BOUNTY DISCO
This is Kuta’s bread and butter club. AND, it’s wheelchair accessible! The Bounty is highly dense; meaning, there’s a ton of people in here. It’s fun, has live music, a dance club, dance floor, pool tables and lots of energy. Matter of fact, the band that plays makes the club even more fun when coax drunken audience members to jump on stage and sing along with them!
Location: Jalan Legian, Kuta. It’s down (south) the street from the White Rose Hotel and near Poppies Lane 2.
Cost: Drinks costs between Rp25,000 to Rp40,000
Accessibility: The Bounty is wheelchair accessible. The entrance is ground level. As you go through a hall, to the left are pool tables. There is a ramp up to the tables. Straight ahead is a bar and hang out area with tables and a large Karaoke stage. There is a ramp up to this area. The the very far back of this already enormous place is the actual disco. This, however, is not wheelchair accessible because there are steps up to the disco. Not to worry, the disco itself is never the popular part of the Bounty.
PADDY’S BAR
Paddy’s Bar is inappropriately named: it’s a huge dance club. I like this club better than The Bounty, even the though staff is friendlier at The Bounty and even though there are a few large steps to climb up to Paddy’s. It’s a sleek, slick, super hot club with hot people. Inaccessible as this bar is (as far as the entrance goes. Once you’re in the club, Paddy’s is wheelchair accessible), Paddy’s is fun. They have a huge dance floor and lounge chairs on the side. I met some fun-lovin Aussies in the club and keep in touch with them over Facebook. Service is pretty good once you’re in there ordering drinks. Get ready to be paddy-whacked!
Location: On Jalan Legian right next to The Bounty in Kuta
Cost: Rp20,000 to Rp40,000
Accessibility: Not wheelchair accessible at the entrance unfortunately. There are a few large steps and the staff doesn’t seem so helpful. Too bad, the best bar and disco in the area. Once inside, however, you’re good to go.
ENGINE ROOM
This is a very difficult club to get into as far as wheelchair accessibility is concerned but where there’s a will – and a friend – there’s a way. Right?! This club, once you’re in, is fun and gets packed. There’s a raised dance floor and bar and high energy in the Engine Room in Kuta!
Location: Right across the street from The Bounty and Paddy’s Bar on Jalan Legian.
Cost: Rp10,000 – Rp25,000
Accessibility: The Engine Room is not wheelchair accessible. There are a few very high and awkward steps and an imposing railing at the top of the steps.
M BAR GO
This is the latest cool club. I poked my head in there but there weren’t as many people in there as there were in Paddy’s Bar and The Bounty.
Location: On Jalan Legian and Jalan Melasti north of The Bounty
SKY GARDEN LOUNGE
This club is next to The Bounty but it has a huge flight of stairs, so I didn’t check it out. My friend went inside and said it was awesome – and packed.
OTHER
Other popular clubs and bars around Legian and the higher end Seminyak are Double Six, Paparazzi Lounge, Hu a Bar and Ku De Ta.
