The Grove
Overview: Dubbed the “Disneyland for adults,” The Grove offers an upscale yet affordable shopping, culinary and entertainment experience second to none in Los Angeles. You won’t find street performers, which characterize some of the hustle and bustle feel of Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica, in this outdoor, pedestrian only shopping complex. The Grove is recessed far back from Fairfax Ave and 3rd St (not to be confused with Third St) and enclosed by the high shopping center buildings, so you don’t hear the traffic. It almost has an “escape” feeling. It’s also worth noting that the Grove hosts events with big names such as Bruno Mars (not street performers).
The Grove is located on the grounds of the Farmers Market in LA’s Fairfax district. After you park, you’ll likely saunter through one of the many quaint courtyards with art deco buildings and enter the magic shopping kingdom. The Grove is comprised of a wide and meandering paved blacktop path with brick-laden tracks for a trolley in the middle of the path that will take you through shopping center. At the center of The Grove is a large, harmonized water fountain surrounded by grass and benches.
On either side of the path are restaurants with patios and of course, your retail stores–boutique and chains. Notable stores include Potter Barn and Crate & Barrel for your home decor shopping, Barnes & Noble (housed in a very classic building) for your reading pleasure, J. Crew, Forever 21, Gap, Nordstrom, and Banana Republic for the more affordable clothing acquisitions, and Barneys New York and Anthropologie for your upscale, boutique tastes. And, Apple has a presence.
Among the eateries, there’s La a delicious but somewhat pricey La Piazza Ristorante Italiano restaurant with a nice patio area, Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill and The Cheesecake Factory. However, adjacent to The Grove proper is the historic Farmers Market LA where you can find a richer variety of organic, local and international culinary fares for half the cost.
Top off your Grove experience with a movie at the Pacific Theatres screens in the Grove.
