Chiang Mai, Thailand Travel Guide
About Getting Around Attractions Hotels Eats Essentials & Practicals
Money Matters in Chiang Mai
As in Bangkok and especially in Chiang Mai where people and businesses (restaurants, street vendors, tuk-tuk drivers) carry less money, you should use smaller notes. The 7 Elevens and Family Marts convenience stores are a good place to change out money to smaller denominations.
Chiang Mai has plenty of ATMs and currency exchange kiosks around but many of the currency exchange kiosks keep odd hours. Some do not open until the afternoon.
Currency: the Thai Baht is the currency in Chiang Mai.
ATMs and BANKS
Chiang Mai has plenty of ATMs around but the general rule of thumb adhered to by the expats in Chiang Mai is to use Siam Commercial Bank for money withdraws and financial transactions such as wire transfers.
Some Siam Commercial Bank branches and ATM machines are located on Ratchadamnoen Road about 25 yards in Chiang Mai’s Old City east wall and on the corner of Moon Muang Road Ratvithi Road as well as around the Night Bazaar on Loi Kroh Road and Chang Kleng Road (sometimes noted as Chang Klan Road).
TIPPING
There is no need to tip in Thailand but you can leave the change you get from a purchase at a restaurant.
