Nuart Theatre
Overview: Once a month on a Saturday night, you’ll see a huge line of other-wordly, often scantily dressed Rocky Horror Picture Show fanatics. Yes, this show is still around and manages to reel the alternative hordes. The youngsters make it a party on the sidewalk before the show and during. If you haven’t experienced a Rocky Horror Picture Show, get your butt over to a theater that shows it. The crowd itself is more entertaining than the movie.
This epic, large one-screen theatre in West Los Angeles probably plays the most eclectic, artsy and classic (remember Enter the Dragon?) movies in the Los Angeles area. Located near the 405 Freeway on Santa Monica Blvd and Sawtelle Blvd, the theatre is easy to access.
The beauty of the Nuart Theatre lies in its plate of movies and specials. Most of the time, the theatre features truly arthouse films. Recall The Blair Witch Project some years back. Before the movie became a phenomenon, the Nuart Theatre had its hands on it and drew the crowds before the mass joined in. Additionally, the Nuart Theatre is known bring back old classics and have special screenings like Enter the Dragon and Hannibal Lecter.
The Nuart is an old theatre. It’s not the most well-kept and the huge hall of the theatre (could probably stack 500 elephants) and lack of state of the art sound probably doesn’t help the sound quality. However, it is the age and the expansiveness of the hall that gives the Nuart a certain mystique that movie-goers in Los Angeles gravitate towards. The Nuart also sells various cinema knickknacks and souvenirs in the lobby.
It’s worth noting that there is an art-house, vintage Cinefile (www.cinefilevideo.com) movie rental sits right next to the Nuart Theatre.
