Transportation in Madrid
CABS, TAXIS
The cabs in Madrid are white and/or black with red stripes. They are metered. A note about fares: if you only want to go a short distance, the cab driver may take you the long way around, thinking you don’t know the area.
Location: These cabs can be found anywhere at the airport or in the city.
Cost: Meter initially registers at 1.35 euros; and 0.65 euros per additional kilometer. Tip at least 10% of the fare.
Airport to Hotel: Depends on where you’re hotel is located. If you’re in the center of Sol, about 30 euros plus a 4 euro surcharge.
Cab Airport Location: Cabs are lined up in queues just outside the international terminal at the airport.
Getting Around the City: Check the bus and metro system first for accessible stops before using a cab. Cab fares can be fairly expensive, depending on your destination.
BUSES
The city buses in Madrid that are handicap accessible are primarily red and the routes are clearly marked at bus stops. These buses with Handicap signs on them.
Accessibility: On the buses, there are designated seats or parking spots, so to speak, for people in wheelchairs. You should arrange with the bus driver the stop you want to make so he or she is aware and will make accommodations.
Site: www.emtmadrid.es/. Unfortunately, there aren’t any handheld printed bus routes. You can find out routes and lines with handicap access online but the process of finding routes on line might be laborious.
Cost: Like the Madrid metro, the cost for bus fare is 1 eur and 10 trips are 6,40 eur. Each ticket is good for one zone.
SHUTTLES
AeroCity Bus
This is a shared shuttle service from the airport and back. The driver of the car that picked me up was experienced in dealing with wheelchairs. He folded up my wheelchair and put it in the back of the van quickly.
Site: www.aerocity.com
Ph: 91-747-75-70
Cost: 20 eur, one way from the Barajas Airport to Plaza del Sol
Accessibility: The van is a smaller van. But, the driver informed me that AeroCity has larger vans with handicap access.
