Other Chiang Mai Temples
Overview: Chiang Mai has over 300 temples. Places of devotion, Chiang Mai temples are central in the lives of Thais, linking tradition, past and present. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is the most famous of Chiang Mai temples, but some of Chiang Mai’s other temples carry considerable weight and importance. Here are some of the most well-known and revered:
WAT SUAN DOK
A large 500 year old bronze Buddha and the picturesque white chedis of this sprawled out temple outside the western gate of the Old City, makes Wat Suan Dok a favorite temple to visit.
WAT CHIANG MAN
Perhaps the most significant temple besides Doi Suthep, Wat Chiang Mai was constructed in 1296 by King Mengrai and serves as the oldest temple in Chiang Mai. This temple is located in Old City’s near the northern gate, Chang Puak.
WAT CHEDI LUANG
Boasting one of the tallest chedis in Chiang Mai’s, Wat Chedi Luang is located on Phra Pokklao Road in the middle of the Old City.
WAT PHRA SINGH
Located in the western section of the Old City, Wat Phra Singh houses the Phra Singh Buddha in the venerated Lai Kham chapel or prayer hall.
Some other Chiang Mai temples include Wat Sum Pow, Wat Phran Aon and Wat Muenlarn off Ratchadamnoen in the Old City.
