TUK-TUKS, MOTORCYCLES WITH CARRIAGES
Overview: In Siem Reap, your transportation options are the usual for Southeast Asia: mini-van, tuk-tuks that are motorcycles with trailers, motos (small motorcycles or mo-peds), cabs and rental cars.
From the airport, the Freedom hotel picked me up in a tuk-tuk, a small three-wheeled carriage pulled by a motorcycle. The experience in tuk-tuks in Siem Reap is a novelty and my driver was a pro, unlike Bangkok. There is no real pollution, but the dust sometimes kicks up. You get a sense of adventure in the tuk-tuks in Siem Reap because you’re exposed to the climate and elements and the Cambodian people tend to stare at you going by. There is by far, much less pollution in the air in Siem Reap than Bangkok. Sometimes the dirt kicks up, especially if a little breezy around the temples. That’s part of the fun visiting the temples in a tuk-tuk.
My driver from the Freedom hotel was extremely helpful and got the folding part of the wheelchair down to a science.
Cost: Tuk-tuks and the same driver will cost around $12 – $15 for half a day, taking you to the temples and Old Market area. A whole day is around $15 to $20.
